Our Story

ABOUT THE STORE

We are a small outpost and print shop in Stamford, New York where you can shop hiking & camping gear along with some cool threads, home goods and locally made products. Where the shop is now at 81 Main Street, attached to 79 Main Street, was originally The Stamford Mirror. 79 Main Street was the office of the local newspaper which offered local printing and sold stationery.

81 Main street was built later and housed a clothing shop, candy shop and later the O'Conner Pharmacy where Sal frequented as a kid with his grandfather.

To shop Catskill Outpost is to support local artisans and makers. Our shop is unique in that all of the screen printed products are designed and traditionally silkscreen printed by owner, Sal Fabbella. Sure, you can order custom screen printed goods from a large corporation- but it will never have the personal touch and attention to detail that is  printed by hand. At Catskill Outpost, we’re doing it the old fashioned way-creating designs, using the darkroom, making screens, mixing inks and applying with squeegees. It’s a lot of hard work, but the quality is undeniable.

We care about making you look and feel great, using mostly American-made garments to be proud of. Whether you’re a local volunteer fire department looking for gear for your members, a brewery looking to add a merch line, or are simply stopping in the shop for a new look or gift, we’ve got you covered.

ABOUT SAL

Sal grew up in Brooklyn, New York but would regularly visit his grandparents upstate in Stamford. His parents and grandparents had immigrated from rural Sicily to Brooklyn in the early 1960’s and one Sunday about a decade later, they read an ad in the Italian newspaper for a farmhouse in the Catskills. Reminded of their life and connection to nature in Italy, they instantly fell in love with the mountains of Stamford. While they had always remained connected to homesteading in Brooklyn (making wine and cheese), the Catskills offered them the space and opportunity to connect with nature again. In Stamford, they thrived- raising chickens, processing lamb, planting tiny orchards and gardens, foraging wild greens, hunting small game and honoring their Italian traditions. Sal's childhood memories of the family's traditions have clearly been transported to present day living. Celebrations with family, cooking with nonna, chopping firewood with dad or going fishing with his uncle.

Sal’s grandparents instilled in him the value of hard work, good times, and wonderful food. He fell in love with the upstate way of life and opened Catskill Outpost in 2019, carrying on his family's legacy. He has made the farmhouse his home, restoring it back to its former glory- pruning the orchards, tending the gardens, and making pizza in the brick-oven his ancestors built into the side of the mountain.

With a B.A. in Communication and Design, Sal got his start as a graphic designer and art director. He has worked with hundreds of clients over the years, helping businesses large and small, design everything from logos to campaigns to websites. Early on in his career Sal became obsessed with screen printing and working with his hands and decided to start a print business. This took off and his client list grew to the Catskills. During this period he began vending at local fairs and markets, where the consensus from the local community was to open a retail shop. This led to a new chapter and the opening of a brick & mortar retail / print shop. This move connected him to artists, community members, vendors, musicians and more. The shop has collaborated with dozens of local makers since opening, becoming something bigger than just a retail space.

For Sal, both Catskill Outpost and his family's home in Stamford are a true labor of love.
